GreenBy3 speaks to Aiken Fellows at College of Charleston

GreenBy3’s founder and president Jorge Riano spoke to the William Aiken Fellows Society and Honors College students at the College of Charleston recently. It was an opportunity for the students to learn about what GreenBy3 does and how they can get involved with the company through internships.

GreenBy3’s internships aren’t your typical internships. Students are given great responsibility within the company, which gives them the chance to gain real world experience. At the same time, GreenBy3 believes in offering students the opportunity to really explore doing something they are interested in.

“We’ll create something that matches what you want to do,” Riano told the students.

Trisha Folds-Bennett, PhD explained she invited Riano to speak to the students because of the way he’s brought a lot of ideas and passions together in a business model. The company is poised for growth serving the building and renovation needs of companies in the Charleston area, specializing in assisting businesses within the technology sector.

Riano explained to the students that GreenBy3 oversees construction and renovation projects for clients. Three main components of GreenBy3’s success lie in construction coordination, team collaboration and building sustainability. There’s also a focus on creativity, which GreenBy3 employs during all phases from design/concept through construction to the completion of a renovation or new construction project. 

Aiken Fellow Parks Barroso, who interned with GreenBy3 last summer, shared his experience with his fellow students. In addition to many other responsibilities, Parks was tasked with helping the company move from a 10,000 square foot warehouse on the former Navy Base, to a 2,000 square foot space on Upper King Street.

“For a company that focuses on not throwing things away, we had to figure out how to move all the stuff in the warehouse, give it away or find a new use for it in the new space.”

In addition to the technical skills GreenBy3 can help a student develop, the company also focuses on the soft skills they’ll need to build relationships – and trust – in the business world.

“We want to add the element of human touch to our projects,” Riano said. “When we create a personal one-on-one relationship with our clients; that means the world to us. The client understands we’re not just churning out another project and going onto the next thing. We make a connection with everything we do.

“Our clients trust us to get things done for them,” Riano said. “Once they trust us, the stress of what to do regarding the construction of their building goes away. We don’t want them to have that burden. It’s our job to handle things so they can go on running their business.”
