The Tiny Office
The Tiny Office was first conceived in March of 2011. Inspired by the Tiny Homes movement, it was intended to serve as an educational tool, a satellite office for use at project sites and, in the event of a hurricane evacuation, a business continuity plan. A team of about 10 employees, interns and volunteers spent about three years designing and building the Tiny Office. Its current home is at GreenBy3’s Permaculture Experiment Site in Charleston, South Carolina.
- Energy: The Tiny office is powered by 2 to 4 reclaimed 85w Solar panels with 4 reclaimed 6v Golf Cart batteries stored in recessed compartment in the floor. A Generator will also be able to provide power to the Tiny Office.
- Water catchment system: an inverted pitched roof (design taken from Biz611) at an angle captures water and directs it toward the front where it is captured into a rain barrel. The rainwater is used as non-potable water in the bathroom to wash hands and other uses
- Restroom: hand washing station powered by foot pump. Utilizes captured rain water. GreenBy3 built a pre-composting toilet that uses reclaimed sawdust from GreenBy3’s wood shop.

- Wood: Came mostly from various construction site waste containers, surplus and building deconstructions or demolitions
- 5-v Crimp Metal Siding: from the demolition of a circa 1930’s home where it was used a roofing material
- TPO (Thermoplastic polyolefin) Roofing: this came from the new roof of Biz611. It was added to the original order to reduce transportation costs, fuel, etc. for a separate order.
- Hurricane Strapping: All metal for this strapping was reclaimed from various projects and other sources of used materials.
- Insulation: All insulation for the flooring is extruded polystyrene foam reclaimed from boat docks and boats. All walls have a radiant barrier applied where heavy duty aluminum foil was used. R-15 and R-19 insulation was reclaimed from construction sites or used material sources.
- Tyvek house wrap: reclaimed from home construction sites Windows : the three double hung windows were reclaimed from a home renovation project
- Electrical wiring: 95% of the wiring was reclaimed from commercial projects. 5% was bought new.
- Lights: LED lights were bought new.
