College of Charleston – Rita Hollings Science Center
Client: College of Charleston
Location: Rita Hollings Science Center, Charleston, SC
Scope:Rita Hollings Science Center, built in 1972 and operating as part of the College of Charleston, is undergoing a complete renovation. C of C’s Office of Sustainability is heading up an effort to qualify the soon-to-be renovated building for the Green Building Initiative’s sustainability certification. GreenBy3 was contracted to remove as much material from the building as possible to be upcycled, repurposed or donated to the community, thereby diverting it from the landfill. The items removed consisted primarily of furniture. With substantial assistance from Habitat for Humanity, GreenBy3 was able to save almost 19,000 lbs of material from entering the landfill.
Client Testimonial:
“We were in the pre-demolition phase for a Green Globes certified building and were looking to divert from the landfill as many materials as possible from the inside of the building. This building had been accumulating stuff (chairs, desks, binders, etc.) since the 1970s and there was A LOT of it! Greenby3 helped us coordinate reuse or recycling of nearly 20,000lbs of materials. Their flexibility & project management allowed us to do this on a very tight timeline and within our limited budget. They were great to work with and were vital to us meeting our sustainability goals.” – Jen Jones, Facilities Coordinator, Office of Sustainability, CofC
